JAMIE RENTON & GUESTS
Spinning Ethiopian & global sounds

£5/£3
8.00pm - midnight

Are you ready to rock to the Ethio beat?

Led by a former star pupil of Ethiopiques vibraphone legend Mulatu Astatke, Krar Collective deliver a stunning programme of traditional music from different parts of Ethiopia, following a much appreciated performance at WOMAD. The ancient 6-stringed krar harp is associated with the azmari minstrel tradition. In the hands of krar-ist Temesgen Taraken (featured on Mulatu Astatke and the Heliocentrics CD) and with a bit of pedal magic, it becomes a gritty ancient rock guitar that set up grooves you have to move to. Accompanied by simple kebero drums and led by an accomplished vocalist, this trio of musicians create a surprisingly full band sound, based on other-worldy Ethiopian modes and driven by hypnotic rhythms.

Andy Morgan (former manager of Tinariwen)
"I never expected to find this Ethiopian music gem hidden away in London. Krar Collective manage to achieve the right balance between the rawness of their roots and the subtleties of their innovative spirit. Precise without being too academic, funky without being too loose. I was really impressed."

WOMAD FESTIVAL 2010
"We discovered the Ethiopian Geata Krar Collective in full flow on the Radio 3 Stage. This vibrant and energetic act had attracted a huge crowd and within a minute we knew why. Colourful and soulful the strong sounds just grabbed you and didn't let go; Ethiopia has a real gem in the passionate Geata Krar Collective and the sound sweetly and seductively filled the Wiltshire countryside transporting us all to different climes for the duration of the set, impossible to stand still, impossible to feel down, mesmerizing."
