Since launching in November
2004 at Darbucka, Clerkenwell's
beautiful Bedouin basement bar,
Chilli Fried has been proud to present international live guests including
Shiyani Ngcobo (South Africa), The Jaipur Kawa Brass Band
(India), Laye Sow (Senegal) and Stella Chiweshe (Zimbabwe).
Acclaimed UK-based performers such as Reem Kelani, Soothsayers,
Mukka, JJC & 419 Squad, Little George Sueref
and Horace X have also appeared and DJs Charlie Gillett,
Andy Kershaw, Natty Bo and Eric Soul have all
graced the decks.
This unique global music
night, has now also established itself as one of the most popular
monthly residencies at the Brixton Ritzy Cafe Bar. As with the ongoing
original Chilli Fried night at Darbucka in Clerkenwell, Chilli Fried
South offers great music from around the world, delicious food and
a warm vibe. Opening and closing proceedings is DJ and world music
journalist Jamie Renton spinning global beats and roots rhythms.
Jamie Renton is
a London-based globalbeat DJ, promoter and journalist.
As a DJ he has played at Cargo, Big Chill Bar, Guanabara,
93 Feet East, The Albany and Shebu, alongside
the likes of Felix Buxton (Basement Jaxx), Bobby
Friction, Jerry Dammers, Gaz Mayall, Charlie
Gillett, Verity Sharp and Ross Allen, as well as
running his regular Chilli Fried sessions at Darbucka and the Ritzy
Cafe Bar.
He has written for a
number of publications including The Guardian, The Independent,
Songlines, The Beat and The Encyclopaedia of Popular
Music and is a regular contributor to fRoots and Straight
No Chaser. He has interviewed a wide range of artists including
Damon Albarn, Gotan Project, Taj Mahal, Ozomatlu,
Steve Earl and members of The Buena Vista Social Club and
has written sleevenotes for albums by Los De Abajo and Fantazia.
